GUIDANCE FOR COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS
How to Choose a Digital Literacy Program for Your Organization
A practical planning guide for nonprofits, libraries, and workforce agencies selecting digital literacy training.
Plan your organization’s trainingStart with the task, then choose the training
List what learners need to do: use email, apply for work, access healthcare, or reconnect after release. A broad course can miss the immediate barrier. Choose a pathway tied to the tasks your audience will actually use.
Check the starting point
Ask about device access, connectivity, current skills, language needs, and accessibility. Use a short conversation or practice task rather than assuming everyone begins at the same level.
Define the delivery responsibilities
Confirm who provides devices, the location, instruction, learner support, and follow-up. Set the session length and group size around your participants. Ask how learners will practice between sessions.
Choose measures you can observe
Attendance matters, but demonstrated tasks tell you more about learning. Define a few achievable tasks before training and compare starting skills with later practice. Keep reporting proportionate and protect participant information.
Match the pathway to your audience
Digital Foundations supports beginners; Digital Workforce focuses on employment tasks; Digital Independence addresses daily services; Digital Re-Entry brings digital steps together around returning home. Discuss your audience and goals before requesting a proposal.
